" "Twitter war begins, "#BlockNarendraModi" trends, over abusive tweets against Gauri Lankesh

Malviya said that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal were never questioned about abuse and threats by their followers.

Senior Congress Party leader Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday suggested that people like senior journalist Gauri Lankesh were being eliminated because of the existence of an ideological conflict, while denying at the same time that his party had never said that the BJP or the RSS was responsible for her murder. PM Modi was later slammed for following a person who would write objectionable language publically on the death of a person.

Fact-checking website Alt News reported about several other accounts, some of which were followed by the PM, labelling Lankesh a "Naxal sympathiser" and hurled abuse at her.

Malviya said: "We have multiple examples of leaders curbing free speech on social media including the previous PMO handle".

Divya Spandana furhter said: "May we remind PM Modi and BJP that it is this very thought that led to assassination of Mahatama Gandhi by Godse with RSS distributing candies and celebrating the murder of "father of the Nation"?"

#BlockNarendraModi was trending on twitter on Thursday until early evening.

One tweet in Hindi said, "A bitch has died a dog's death and now all the pups are whining in one voice".

Another controversial profile which Narendra Modi follows is of Rita who goes with username @RitaG74, who claims to be a former All India Radio presenter.

"We will determinedly continue this fight despite PM Modi's conspiratorial silence". Some people attribute it to his love-hate relationship with the English speaking press since his days as Gujarat Chief Minister. Expressing happiness on the killing of anyone is shameful, regrettable and totally against Indian traditions.

"The culprit should be put behind the bars as soon as possible".
