On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed that the French capital would host the 2024 Olympics, while Los Angeles was awarded the 2028 Games. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and members of the city's bid committee were there for the IOC's announcement.
The evaluation commission signed off on those Monday, saying that although details need to be finalized, it is confident LA can host in 2028.
"Despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee has awarded L.A. the bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, the fight isn't over", the NOlympics LA group said in a statement.
That confirms what seemed more and more apparent this summer as the two cities vied against one another in the bid process for the 2024 Games.
The LA 2028 team were casual and relaxed, with Bid Chair Casey Wasserman promising a "unique brand of California cool".
They are looking into allegations of purchasing of votes by members of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) to ensure Rio would be picked as a host city by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Paris was uniquely interested in 2024 as that marks the 100th anniversary of the last time Paris hosted the Olympics.
As if to show they're not anxious about today's vote, members of the Los Angeles bid committee wore sneakers to their presentation.
After three failed attempts and 12 years after the demoralizing and disheartening loss to the London bid in 2005, Paris has finally been awarded the Olympic Games it has craved. That overarching public support has been a cornerstone of the city's bid, even though there are questions about whether anyone in Los Angeles is all that excited about an event that is still 11 years away.
The IOC considered both bids to be strong, leading to today's historic event.
Los Angeles' plans include the use of the UCLA campus for the Olympic Village and will leverage all existing or temporary venues and infrastructure. The two cities were selected following a unanimous vote.
This time, no unpleasant surprises for Los Angeles and Paris. "A hundred years after 1924 we are bringing the Games back to Paris".
In 2015, Boston was initially awarded the USA bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, but dropped out. It bid unsuccessfully for the games of 1992, 2008 and 2012.
