Gerard Piqué backs Ernesto Valverde for Barcelona job

Turan is eligible to play in the Copa del Rey final against Alaves but it remains to be seen whether Luis Enrique will give him playing time. The newspaper said the announcement would be made next week. "I never talk about negotiations with clubs and that won't change".

"I do not forget to have won a title", he said.

"I am very happy and thankful for the chance the club has taken on me", he told the club's website.

He said there was still the possibility of taking some time off and not immediately taking over another club. "In the end I can do whatever I want, no?"

Valverde, who played for Barcelona from 1988 until 1990, added that he would "evaluate my situation as soon as I walk out of this door". However, since the departure of Xavi, and the imminent departure of Andres Iniesta, the clubs options in the centre of the park look limited.

Ernesto Valverde will not be in charge of Athletic Bilbao next season, the Basque club announced on Tuesday, amid reports in Spain that he will become Barcelona's next manager.

Ernesto Valverde confirmed on Wednesday he was leaving Athletic Bilbao.

Valverde, has managed Athletic since 2013, winning the Supercopa de Espana in 2015.

Valverde boasts four years in charge of Bilbao in his most recent spell at the club, as well as periods with Barca's crosstown rivals Espanyol, Valencia, Villarreal and Greek side Olympiakos.
