Anton Yelchin, 'Star Trek' actor, dies in vehicle accident at 27

Anton Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov in the new Star Trek films, died on Saturday in a freak accident.

According to Perez Hilton, thousands of Jeep Grand Cherokees were recalled because of a design flaw that caused them to accidentally stay in neutral when their driver's thought they were in park.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall report dated April the 22nd, some Jeep Grand Cherokees from 2014 and 2015 have a defect in that they do not have sufficient warning mechanisms to deter drivers from getting out of the auto after failing to put it in the PARK position.

In April, the automaker said it would recall 811,586 vehicles in the US for the issue (more than 1.1 million in North America), and the recall included the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

"In a May the 24th letter to dealers, Fiat Chrysler said it anticipated having the software updates required to fix the vehicles no later than July or August", Reuters reports. The company previously had told owners it hoped to come up with a "permanent" remedy by the fourth quarter.

The recall was done at NHTSA's urging, which again warned owners "until all of these recalled vehicles are fixed, owners should take extra care to make sure their auto is in park and turned completely off before exiting". "It is premature to speculate on the cause of this tragedy".

"It appeared (Yelchin) had momentarily exited his auto, leaving it in the driveway", Houser said.
